Christian Persecution in India: The Real Story

We have heard about what the Christians in India have called the persecutions against them.
 However, there is much more to this story than we often hear, and there are certainly two sides to it. The following is a first-hand investigative article that relates what has really been going on with the Christians in India, much of which has been kept from the public. This shows the duplicity in the Christian activities in India. This article, by Francois Gautier, is reprinted from the "Annual Research Journal, 2001" published by the Institute for Rewriting Indian [and World] History.

WILL HINDUISM SURVIVE THE PRESENT CHRISTIAN OFFENSIVE?

When Prime Minister Vajpayee was in the US in September (2000) , the National Association of Asian Christians in the US (whom nobody had heard about before), paid $ 50,000 to the New York Times to publish "an Open Letter to the Honorable Atal Bihari Vajpayee, prime minister of India."

While "warmly welcoming the PM," The NAAC expressed deep concern about the "persecution" of Christians in India by "extremist" (meaning Hindu) groups mentioning as examples "the priest, missionaries and church workers who have been murdered," the nuns "raped," and the potential enacting of conversion laws, which would make "genuine" conversions illegal. The letter concluded by saying "that Christians in India today live in fear."

The whole affair was an embarrassment (as it was intended to be) to Mr. Vajpayee and the Indian delegation, which had come to prod American businessmen to invest in India, a peaceful, pro-Western and democratic country. 

I am born a Christian and I have had a strong Catholic education. I do believe that Christ was an incarnation of Pure Love and that His Presence still radiates in the world. I also believe there are human beings who sincerely try to incarnate the ideals of Jesus and that you can find today in India a few missionaries (such as Father Ceyrac, a French Jesuit, who works mostly with lepers in Tamil Nadu) who are incarnations of that Love, tending tirelessly to people, without trying to convert them.

Tourists detained for allegedly witnessing to Christ 

About 25 American tourists visiting the slum area of a city in Andhra Pradesh state, south India, were taken into custody after allegedly speaking to residents about Christ.  Local Hindu radicals, upset after learning that the tourists were Christians, accused them of attempting religious conversions and complained to the police.

Religious speeches allegedly made by a group of American tourists during a visit to Palamuru Basti, a slum in Baghlingampally, sparked controversy booked  of attempting religious conversions & insulting indian religion ,gods on Thursday [6 April].
The Chikkadpally police took the 25 foreigners, most of them women, into custody initially, but let them off saying they were not at fault. However, a case under Section 298 (uttering words hurting religious sentiments) of Indian Penal Code was registered against four locals, including two pastors, who were guiding the foreigners in going around the city.

Historically, Hindus and Christians have lived in relative peace since the arrival of Christianity in India from the early part of the first millennium. In areas like Kerala, land to build churches had been donated by the then Hindu kings and Hindu landlords only. The arrival of European colonialists brought about large scale missionary activity in South India and North-East India. Many indigenous cultures were converted to Christianity. Sometimes they were voluntary, and other times they were coerced. The Goan Inquisition is pointed out as a blot in Christianity's India history.

Then Hindus who converted to Christianity typically retained their social customs, including caste practices;^[62] Dalit Christiansmake up 70% of India's Christian population.^[63] Aggressive proselytizing by Christian missionaries under British rule was a cause of resentment among Hindus and Muslims in the 19th century, who felt that their cultures were being attacked. This was one of the several causes of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 against the British Raj. The role of the Anglican padres and chaplains in that conflict is recounted in William Dalrymple's The Last Mughal^[64] Also, many Christian ideals prompted reform movements within the Hindu society in the 19th century, the most notable being the Brahmo Samaj, which was influenced by British Christian Unitarianism.^{[citation needed]}. Some Indian Christians have retained Hindu customs and practices, and have combined Hindu customs with Christianity to achieve a unique brand of Indian Christianity.

In more contemporary periods, Hindu-Christian amity is sometimes challenged by partisan politics and extremism from both communities^{[citation needed]}. Christian missionary activity among lower-caste Hindus has created groups of Crypto-Christians, particularly amongDalits^{[citation needed]}. As a response to allegedly aggressive missionary activity four Indian states (Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu(later repealed) mainly) have passed laws restricting or prohibiting religious conversion.

The Government of the state of Tripura has claimed that it has evidence that the Baptist Church of Tripura has been supporting the terrorist group National Liberation Front of Tripura. The NLFT is a separatist group that has been accused of forcing tribals to become Christians and has banned Hindu festivals.^[65

Christian-Missionary Raj in India thru Sonia (Miano) Gandhi

Are we heading towards a Christian India ? Francois GautierI am a westerner and a born Christian. I was mainly brought up in catholic schools, my uncle, Father Guy Gautier, a gem of a man, was the parish head of the beautiful Saint Jean de Montmartre church in Paris ; my father, Jacques Gautier, a famous artist in France, and a truly good person if there ever was one, was a fervent catholic all his life, went to church nearly every day and lived by his Christian values. There are certain concepts in Christianity I am proud of : charity for others, the equality of system in many western countries, Christ’s message of love and compassion….
Yet, I am a little uneasy when I see how much Christianity is taking over India under the reign of Sonia Gandhi : according to a 2001 census, there are about 2.34 million Christians in India ; not even 2,5% of the nation, a negligible amount. Yet there are today five Christian chief ministers in Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
One should add that the majority of politicians in Sonia Gandhi’s closed circle are either Christians or Muslims. She seems to have no confidence in Hindus.Ambika Soni, a Christian, is General Secretary of the Congress and a very powerful person, with close access to Sonia Gandhi. Oscar Fernandes is Union Programme Implementation Minister. Margaret Alwa is the eminence grise of Maharasthra. Karnataka is virtually controlled by AK Anthony, whose secretaries are all from the Southern Christian association. Valson Thampu, a Hindu hater, is Chairman NCERT curriculum Review Committee, John Dayal, another known Hindu baiter, has been named by Sonia Gandhi in the National Integration Council ; and Kancha Ilaya, who hates Hindus, is being allowed by the Indian Government to lobby with the UN and US Congress so that caste discrimination in India is taken-up by these bodies. ( One can also add to list Ajit jogi, and Digvijay Singh both christian converts & also Pranoy Roy, his niece Arundhati 'suzanna' roy )

థరూర్, రమేశ్‌ల తప్పేమిటి?

'ర క్తంలోను, రంగులోను భారతీయులు; అయితే అభిరుచులు, అభిప్రాయాలు, నైతిక విలువలు, ఆలోచనలలో ఇంగ్లీష్ వారు'గా ఉండే భారతీయులను రూపొందించడానికి 19 వ శతాబ్ది పూర్వార్ధంలో వలస పాలకుడు మెకాలే ప్రవేశపెట్టిన నూతన విద్యావిధానం ఆధునిక భారతదేశపు ఉదారవాద, విశ్వజనీన దృక్పథాలకు విశేషంగా తోడ్పడింది. ఆ సత్ సంప్రదాయాలకు ప్రతినిధులు శశి థరూర్, జైరామ్ రమేశ్.

ఇరువురూ విద్యాధికులు, వివేచనాపరులు. జైరామ్ మెకానికల్ ఇంజనీర్. ఐఐటి, ఎమ్ఐటిల పట్టభద్రుడు. ప్రతిష్ఠాత్మక ఫ్లెట్చర్ స్కూల్ ఆఫ్ లా అండ్ డిప్లొమసీ నుంచి, ప్రప్రథమంగా 22 ఏళ్ళ పిన్నవయస్సులో డాక్టరేట్ పొందిన ప్రతిభావంతుడు థరూర్. ఇరువురూ మెకాలే మానస పుత్రుల అత్యుత్తమ సంప్రదాయాలను పుణికి పుచ్చుకున్నవారే. రాజకీయవేత్తలుగా పరిణమించిన ఈ వృత్తినిపుణు లిరువురూ ఈనాటి భారతీయ రాజకీయాలలో ఇమడలేకపోతున్నట్టుగా కన్పిస్తోంది. వారు చిక్కుకున్న వివాదాలే అందుకు నిదర్శనం.

తన'హృదయాధినేత్రి'కి ఐపిఎల్ కోచి ఫ్రాంచైజీలో వాటా ఇప్పించినందుకు థరూర్, చైనా పట్ల కేంద్ర హోం శాఖ విధానాలను ప్రశ్నించినందుకు రమేశ్ వివాదాల పాలయ్యారు. కేంద్ర మంత్రులుగా ఇరువురూ బహుశా తమ రాజ్యాంగ బాధ్యతలను విస్మరించిన అపరాధానికి పాల్పడ్డారని చెప్పక తప్పదు. థరూర్ ఇప్పటికే తన మంత్రిపదవి (విదేశాంగ శాఖ సహాయ మంత్రి) ని కోల్పోయారు.

పరిస్థితులు ఇలా పరిణమించక పోతే అంతర్జాతీయ దౌత్యవేత్తగా ఆయనకు ఉన్న అనుభవం నుంచి మన విదేశీ వ్యవహారాల శాఖ బాగా లబ్ధి పొంది ఉండేదనడంలో సందేహం లేదు. పర్యావరణ మంత్రిత్వ శాఖకు కొత్త దిశానిర్దేశం చేసిన రమేశ్, కేంద్రహోం శాఖపై తన వివేకరహిత వ్యాఖ్యలకు ఆ శాఖను కోల్పోవడమనే మూల్యాన్ని ఇంకా చెల్లించుకోలేదు.

విడ్డూరం ఏమిటంటే పలువురు రాజకీయవేత్తలు ఎదుర్కొంటోన్న అవినీతి ఆరోపణలతో పోలిస్తే థరూర్, రమేశ్‌లపై వచ్చిన ఆరోపణలు చాలా చాలా చిన్న పాటివి. టెలీకాం మంత్రి ఎ.రాజా వ్యవహారాన్నే తీసుకోండి. స్పెక్ట్రమ్ కుంభకోణంలో దేశ ఖజానాకు దాదాపు 60,000 కోట్ల రూపాయల మేరకు నష్టం వాటిల్లిందని అంచనా. అందుకు బాధ్యుడైన రాజాను తక్షణమే తొలగించాలని ప్రతిపక్షాలు డిమాండ్ చేస్తున్నాయి. అయితే రాజా దళితుడు కదా. ఇదే విషయాన్ని ఆయన నాయకుడు ఎం. కరుణానిధి యూపీఏ నాయకత్వానికి చెప్పారు.

మంత్రిలో నిజాయితీ లోపించడం వల్లే దేశ ఖజానాకు అన్ని వేల కోట్ల రూపాయల నష్టం వాటిల్లిందనేది స్పష్టం. అయితే దళితుడు అవడంతో రాజా తన మంత్రి పదవిలో కొనసాగుతున్నారు! ఆయన అవినీతితో పోలిస్తే ఐపిఎల్ కోచి ఫ్రాంచైజీ వ్యవహారంలో జరిగిన అవకతవకలు ఏపాటివి? ఇక రమేశ్, చైనా విషయంలో కేంద్ర హోంశాఖ విధానాలను విమర్శించడంలో తన అధికార పరిధిని అతిక్రమించారనడంలో సందేహం లేదు. అయితే తన సహచర యూపీఏ మంత్రులపై మమతా బెనర్జీ అదేపనిగా చేస్తోన్న విమర్శలు, ఆరోపణల మాటేమిటి? రమేశ్ క్షమాపణలు చెప్పాడు. మరి మమత విమర్శలకు విరమణ ఎప్పుడు?

ఆంగ్ల భాషను ధారాళంగా మాట్లాడేవారు, ఉన్నత వర్గీయులు, విద్యాధికులు, వృత్తి నిపుణులైన రాజకీయవేత్తలు ప్రజా జీవితంలో ఇలా ఎందుకు వివాదాల పాలవుతున్నారు? అవినీతిని ఉపేక్షించి అయినా సరే దళిత వ్యతిరేకి అన్న ముద్ర పడకుండా చూసుకోవాలనే వైఖరి ప్రతి రాజకీయ పక్షానికి ఉంది. కనుకనే రాజా లబ్ధి పొందారు. ఇక మమత ఒక బలమైన ప్రాంతీయ పక్షం అధినేత్రి, ప్రజాబలం ఉన్న నాయకురాలు కావడంతో ఆమెకు ఎదురు లేకుండా పోయింది.

సమస్యేమిటంటే థరూర్, రమేశ్ లిరువురూ అగ్రకులాలకు చెందిన రాజకీయవేత్తలు. ప్రజాబలం లేనివారు. థరూర్ నాయర్. రమేశ్ మైసూర్ బ్రాహ్మిన్. కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ నాయకత్వంతో ఉన్న సన్నిహిత సంబంధాల కారణంగా తిరువనంతపురం నుంచి లోక్‌సభకు థరూర్ ఎన్నికయ్యారు. రమేశ్ కూడా కాంగ్రెస్ అధిష్ఠానంతో ఉన్న ప్రత్యేక సంబంధాలతోనే ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్‌నుంచి రాజ్యసభకు ఎన్నికయ్యారు.

థరూర్‌ను మంత్రి పదవి నుంచి తొలగించడం చాలా సులభం. ట్విటర్ ఇత్యాధి అత్యాధునిక భావ ప్రసార మాధ్యమాలను ఉపయోగించుకొనేవారిపై మాత్రమే ఆ తొలగింపు ప్రభావం ఉండవచ్చు; కేరళలో ప్రస్తుతమున్న రాజకీయ సమీకరణాలను అది ఏ మాత్రం ప్రభావితం చేయలేదు మరి. రమేశ్ సైతం ట్విటర్‌లో ఉన్న అభిమానుల గురించి చెప్పుకోవల్సిందేగాని తన బహిరంగ సభకు వచ్చేవారి గురించి చెప్పుకునేది ఏమీ ఉండదు. చెప్పవచ్చిందేమిటంటే థరూర్, రమేశ్ లిరువురూ (కాంగ్రెస్‌కు) అనివార్యమైన నాయకులు కారు.

అయితే భారత రాజకీయాలకు థరూర్, రమేశ్ వంటివారు మరింతగా అవసరమన్నది మనం ఒప్పుకోవల్సిన సత్యం. వృత్తి జీవితం నుంచి రాజకీయాలలోకి ఆలశ్యంగా వచ్చినప్పటికీ ప్రజా జీవితంలో గుణాత్మక మార్పుకు విశేషంగా దోహదం చేశారు; సంక్లిష్ట సమస్యల పరిష్కారానికి అవసరమైన మెరుగైన అవగాహనను సమకూర్చారు. విదేశాంగ శాఖ సహాయమంత్రి విధులను థరూర్ నిర్వహించిన తీరును ఆయన సమకాలికుల పనితీరుతో పోల్చిచూడండి.

ఐక్యరాజ్యసమితి దౌత్యవేత్తగా థరూర్‌కు ఉన్న అనుభవం, ఆయన భాషా పాటవం భారత్‌తో సంప్రదింపులు జరపడంలో తమకు ఎంతగానో ఉపకరించాయని, ఆయన మంచి 'మధ్యవర్తి'అని ఆఫ్రికా, లాటిన్ అమెరికా దేశాల దౌత్యవేత్తలందరూ ముక్తకంఠంతో చెపుతారు. పర్యావరణ మంత్రిగా రమేశ్ పనితీరును, అంతకు ముందు ఆ శాఖను నిర్వహించినవారి వ్యవహరణతో పోల్చి చూడండి.

పాత మంత్రుల హయాంలో ఆ శాఖలో ఎవరైనా డబ్బుతో తమకు కావలసిన పనులను పూర్తిచేసుకోగలిగేవారు. పర్యావరణ మార్పులపై అంతర్జాతీయ సదస్సులో మీ దేశానికి, పర్యావరణ సమస్యలపై పరిపూర్ణ అవగాహన ఉన్న మంత్రి లేక భూ ఉష్ణోగ్రతా వ్యాకోచానికి కారణమైన వాయువుల ఉద్గారం గురించి కనీస అవగాహన లేని రాజకీయవేత్త ప్రాతినిధ్యం వహించాలని కోరుకుంటారా?

పాశ్చాత్య దేశాలలో ప్రైవేట్‌రంగంలోని అత్యున్నత స్థాయి నిపుణులు పభుత్వంలో చేరి తమ విధులను దక్షతతో నిర్వహించి తమ సమాజాలకు ఎనలేని సేవలు అందిస్తున్నారు. ఆ దేశాలలో ఇటువంటి మేలు మార్పులు అంతకంతకూ ఎక్కువగా చోటుచేసుకొంటున్నాయి. దురదృష్టవశాత్తు మన దేశంలో అటువంటి మార్పులకు దోహదం చేయగల వ్యక్తులను 'నిజమైన భారతదేశం'తో సంబంధం లేని ఆంగ్ల మానస పుత్రులైన కులీనులుగా పరిగణిస్తున్నారు.

ఉన్నత వర్గాల వారి విజయాల పట్ల అసూయతోనే ఇటువంటి వైఖరి చూపుతున్నారని చెప్పవచ్చు. అయితే ఆంగ్ల భాషలో ప్రవేశం లేని వారి పట్ల ఆంగ్ల భాషా విద్యాధికుల చిన్న చూపుకు ప్రతిస్పందనగానే మన సమాజంలోని అత్యధికులలో అటువంటి అసూయ తలెత్తుతున్నదనే వాస్తవాన్ని కూడా మనం ఒప్పుకొని తీరాలి.

కులం, కుటుంబ విధేయతలపై రాజకీయ జీవితాన్ని తీర్చి దిద్దుకొనే సంప్రదాయ, భూస్వామ్య వర్గాలకు చెందిన భారతీయ రాజకీయవేత్తలు థరూర్, రమేశ్‌లను తమ క్షేత్రంలోకి ప్రవేశించిన అనాహుతులుగా పరిగణిస్తున్నారు. ప్రస్తుతం నెలకొనివున్న రాజకీయ వ్యవస్థకు ఆ ద్వయం ఒక ముప్పుగా పరిణమించవచ్చని భావిస్తున్నారు. యథాతథ పరిస్థితిని వారు సవాల్ చేయడమే ఇందుకు కారణం.

థరూర్ గానీ, రమేశ్ గానీ అగ్రశ్రేణి రాజకీయవేత్తల సంతానం కాదు; ఓటు బ్యాంకులు ఉన్న కులనాయకులూ కారు. మధ్యతరగతి భారతీయ కుటుంబాల నుంచి వచ్చిన లక్షలాది ఇతరుల మాదిరిగానే వారిరువురూ తమ విద్యావ్యాసంగాలతోను, కష్టపడి పనిచేయడంద్వారాను ఉన్నతస్థాయికి వచ్చారు.

రాజకీయాలు ప్రతిభావంతులకు ఆటపట్టుకావాలంటే థరూర్, రమేశ్‌లాంటివారు సఫల మనోరథులు కావడం ఎంతైనా అవసరం. సరిగ్గా ఈ కారణంగానే రాజకీయాలలోకి ప్రవేశించిన అటువంటి వృత్తి నిపుణులు మరింత జాగ్రత్తగా నడచుకోవల్సివుంది. ఎందుకంటే ప్రస్తుత రాజకీయ వ్యవస్థలోని ఇతరుల విషయంలో పరిగణనలోకి తీసుకునే ప్రమాణాల కంటే మరింత సమున్నత ప్రమాణాలతో ప్రజలు తమను అంచనా వేస్తారన్న వాస్తవాన్ని థరూర్, రమేశ్‌లు అర్థం చేసుకోవాలి. తాజా కలం: థరూర్, రమేశ్‌లు తాము ఒరవడిగా తీసుకోగల స్ఫూర్తిదాయక వ్యక్తికోసం చూస్తుంటే

వారు నందన్ నీలేకని నుంచి నేర్చుకోవల్సింది ఎంతైనా ఉంది. ఇన్ఫోసిస్ మాజీ సిఇఓ అయిన నందన్ ప్రస్తుతం భారత ప్రజలందరికీ 'యూనిక్ ఐడెంటిఫికేషన్ కార్డ్'లను సమకూర్చే బృహత్త ర బాధ్యతా నిర్వహణలో మునిగిపోయి వున్నారు. ఆయనకేమీ ట్విటర్ అకౌంట్స్ లేవు; పేజ్ 3 పార్టీలకు చాలా దూరంలో ఉంటారు; అహమికలు లేని విద్యా వినయుడు; నాటకీయ, సంచలన ప్రకటనలు చేసే అలవాటు ఆయనకు ఏ కోశానా లేదు. ప్రజా జీవితంలో శ్రామిక చీమ వలె పని చేసేవారు అసాధ్యాలను సుసాధ్యం చేయగలరు; అసాధారణ ఆదరణా పొందగలరు.
